“Welcome to Bearded Basturds Organic Male Grooming & Skincare. When my son was born with a skin problem, and the usual prescribed creams & ointments from the doctor made things worse, the solution had to come from elsewhere.
A home remedy of organic vegetable & fruit oils cleared his problem up completely. That’s when my obsession with natural sciences began, specifically organic chemistry. And by accident, the business was formed. It also started my love affair with using ingredients from the Brazilian rain-forest such as Cupuacu & Bacuri butter to treat symptoms of chronic skin problems. Thanks to those ingredients, and my son as inspiration, we have been able to ship our male grooming products, atopic eczema cream and tattoo recovery cream for example, into 15 different countries worldwide.
In our opinion, many competing products are sold to guys with a really ignorant & dangerous over-focus on being manly while hiding the fact they contain alcohols and cheap, nasty, synthetic harsh chemicals that can have a huge negative impact on their general health & well-being.
We think you are awesome for stopping by, we also hope you can take comfort that no ingredient or product for sale hasn’t already been used on my own infant son. If it’s good enough for baby skin care issues, its good enough for you or who your buying for. Although, when he’s washing I’m sure his PJ Masks toys get more soap than he does! – Craig McKay”

My son had a skin issue when he was born. A home remedy fixed the issue as the prescribed harsh chemical based creams made it worse. That’s when my love affair for ingredients like organic grapeseed and cupaucu butter started. Inspired by my son, Jaxon – Bearded Basturds Male Grooming & Skincare was literally born from the kitchen table.

I was still working rubbish jobs at this point, attending a business accelerator course and dealing with family life. Its funny to look back, I was dead proud of my little branded cupboard space.

At this point, I was still working, I had a job at a local software company (control, alt, delete job) and delivering for Amazon which was the most soul destroying job ever. Hated it at the time but looking back I’m glad it happened as it helped spur me on. When I took this on, I only had a phone, and a mug to start with ha-ha.

You can see here as we got busier, the four semi-pneumatic cold air compression machines we bought to scale up production, some branded lab coats, large tubs of the cosmetic butters we import from Brazil etc and lots of mess ha-ha it was great to see it take shape.

I had my own office, my very first proper office. It was a proud moment, and it was a place that Jaxon used to enjoy firing me, over and over again for giggles. I could see at this point just how much he was looking up at me and paying attention. I’v always tried to be the best example to him I can be ever since. He’s the reason the company started and the reason I’ll never quit. It’s all for his future.

My face when we managed to hit 13 different countries. We didn’t have massive volume to be cocky or that, but it was a huge milestone nonetheless for me.

Here you can see one of the larger machines, it has a motorised stirrer inside the vat to keep the soap from settling before its poured from the nozzle via cold air compression.

This is the other big machine, this one has heated coils on the inside of the vat so melt the butters together and keep them in liquid form so we can pour them into the 60ml jars you can see in image.

In this picture you can see me doing some research & development for the Mucky Basturd – our mud mask for men. In the workshop we’ve developed an eczema cream, beard care products, tattoo recovery creams and much more. Its been so much fun. You can also glimpse the smaller machines used to mix and pour our oils.

That was the title of the talk I did at a local college. Never in a million years did I think I’d be invited to speak to a college and its students on entrepreneurship, or think anyone would have the time to listen to my story. Quite incredible.

Incredible to get to the final, Small Business Of The Year was a bloody good compliment to get.

It’s been social media shares like the one you can see here, that have given us a fighting chance of survival. Our Staunch Basturds and avid followers are the reason we’ve had such a long reach across the globe. We owe them everything.

I ended up in the entrepreneur of the year category but lost out on the night, however I was also in the creative entrepreneur of the year category, too. And I picked up the highly commended award which is just fucking brilliant. Jaxon – that one’s for you, son!

Since September 2017 I’ve been dragged bare arsed backwards through Dante’s Inferno to stay in my sons life. Fighting against a corrupt system and watching as my family and myself are constantly battling evil and parental alienation, I decided to use the Bearded Basturds brand and notoriety to set my own charity up. The Basturd Dad Foundation is a father’s for equal rights charity. Our mission is to become a suicide prevention charity later on down the line. In the meantime, we will aim to support dads who are fighting the same evil I am and just want to be a loving father to their children. We’re on Facebook, come say hello.

We are very proud of the fact our ingredients are imported and sourced from the likes of fruit plantations in Paraguay and the Amazonian Rainforest. We use the super-fruits you can see to make our creams and the beautiful, colourful flowers for the oils and scents.
