Barber Shop News: The 16 stage luxury hot towel beard trim
Barber shop news folks. Specifically, about the luxury hot towel beard trim at our Dunfermline shop. We will blog, explain and expand on all services offered but this one has had the most interest so far. So here are the details for those looking to find out what exactly is included for your money. It should also explain why we expect you to be in the chair for a VERY comfortable 45-60 minutes.
At the Bearded Basturds barber shop, it’s our mission to bring back the old-fashioned, historic charm of the traditional men’s grooming experience. Our 16 stage luxury hot towel beard trim is something we think contributes to that mission. We’ve worked our socks off to create a tranquil yet modern environment to deliver a premium male grooming experience. When you walk out of the barber shop after your appointment, you won’t be able to help but feel a bit of manly swagger creep into your step, that’s a promise.
Consultation with the Basturd Barber to discuss any areas of concern and of course, the beard design. They key here is communication. The Basturd Barber is shit hot at her job, mindreading?! Not so much! So please feel comfortable enough to talk about what you don’t want, or better yet, get your phone out and show her some ‘beardspiration’ get it? Anyway…bring out Instagram or the likes and show her what you are aiming towards, that way whoever is dealing with you knows to avoid the mutton chops cheek line and so on. It just limits the chances of you walking away unhappy – and we don’t want that at all! Arlene has also invested some serious coin in good barber mags and barbering books you can have a little look through before your appointment.
Beard trimmed and sculpted as desired. Remember what we said above, well here are some questions to ask your barber about your beard trim:
- Where should I have my beard line, around my jaw/neck?
- What style of beard do you think might suit me? (Different beard styles are suited better to your unique features etc.)
- How often should I return to your barber shop for a beard trim?
- How should I comb my beard?
- What’s the best grooming routine to make sure it doesn’t dry out (towel dry versus blow dry etc.)
- What products should I use on my beard? (Take advantage of the Bearded Basturds product business and knowledge centre)
The barber should check and reiterate what’s been said and then everybody is clear about what the aim of the game is, and you’ll be on your merry way to the beard of your dreams. Don’t forget we have the Bearded Basturds handmade product range at your disposal in store. So feel free to discuss them, try them, smell them and ultimately take advice on them. Most of all, try to relax and not to worry. We are the experts, after all, and we won’t leave you looking like Tom Hanks in Castaway.
Application of a premium pre-shave cream to soften the hairs. This is a very important aspect of a luxury hot towel beard trim. If any barber shop rushes this stage or misses it out altogether, then you should call them out about it. Chances are, they are not traditionally trained. Anyway, this step is to protect your skin. It also softens your beard before the shave by softening the hair and creating a thin layer of oil on top of your skin. This improves how the razor glides across the skin and thus reduces irritation AKA razor burn.
Our own lemon scented essential oils are added to the hot towel which is applied to the face for 3 minutes. This is one of the most relaxing parts of a luxury hot towel shave when a hot, moist towel is carefully draped over the face and left for several minutes. This practice, first used by barbers to prepare facial hair for the subsequent shaving ritual, was integrated into many spa facials as an alternative to steam. The mixture of heat and moisture provides an almost decadent sense of relaxation while loosening dead skin cells and dirt from the skin’s surface. As we’ve joked about before, the trick here is to stay awake!
A facial scrub is applied to the face. When it comes to shaving it’s important to create as little resistance between your skin and razor as possible. The exfoliating properties of a face scrub means there is less grime left on your face to clog up the razor, and this means a lesser chance of razor rash, ingrown hairs, and irritation. A thorough scrub before a shave will also help to lift stubborn hairs away from the face to further reduce friction for a closer shave.
Pre-shave cream applied for a second time. It softens and straightens the hairs, making it easier to apply the shaving soap to your beard.
Application of shaving cream with a shaving brush. There are a few reasons why guys have been using shaving brushes since the 1700s. It’s nothing to do with them looking cool, see, the bristles reach under the beard and tenderise the skin below your facial hair before you shave. Using a brush also raises hairs so they’re easily sliced once you start shaving. And applying shaving cream with a brush creates a very slick and evenly distributed lather that reduces the risk of small cuts.
One pass over the area being shaved with the open razor blade. Arlene and our barbers will always check the direction of your hair growth. You should always shave with the grain when using a single blade razor. This will help prevent cuts, irritation and ingrowing hairs.

Buffing the skin with our premium oil. This is put on the skin and any rough areas are checked carefully. While extra effort is being made to make sure all the hairs are gone, the oil will be soothing and conditioning the skin at the same time.
The falling asleep stage…em we mean this is the stage where a face mask is applied for 5-10 minutes. By this time, you won’t just be relaxed, you will be Bearded Basturds Barber Shop relaxed. When you are waiting on your face cleansing mask to come off many have drifted off to beard land, will you?
Cold Towel applied to close the open pores. Pores are home to hair follicles and where sebum (the oil that your skin produces) is made by “sebaceous glands.” Looking close enough, you can see the hair follicle pores with your naked eye, unlike sweat pores that are too small to see. Pores are always open to allow for the oil and hair follicle to surface. Without open, functioning pores, your skin simply wouldn’t function as it should. Getting rid of the debris that blocks your pores is a key ingredient to healthy looking skin and of course a first class luxury hot shave. By working with your pores instead of against them, as well as your beard looking classy you will leave the shop with healthy and silky skin. Working the dirt and debris out of your pours during this process will also reduce razor bumps (in-grown hairs).
The application of a post shave balm and or moisturiser. Now, many men right after shaving will reach firstly for a traditional aftershave and splash it on. Problem…this will irritate the skin, even worse if your skin is sensitive. Balms provide a thick coating of moisture to protect and soothe freshly shaven skin. They contain minimal fragrance and no alcohol, which means they don’t sting when you put them on.
Now we apply an aftershave or cologne to kill off any bacteria left on the cheeks. And to make you smell wonderful, obviously.
If you have sensitive skin or areas that are particularly sensitive we can add talc to these parts to further decrease the chances of any razor rash. It’s at this point, 45-60 minutes later, when you walk out of the barber shop, you won’t be able to help but feel a bit of manly swagger creep into your step. You are fucking welcome.
